Don’t get tricked
555 prezentation CJCH, Brno, 2013
I chose Brno for an exhibition in a public space during the finals of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2013. The name of the installation is taken from the interpretation of oft used Czech sayings and proverbs which share a common meaning: be careful, don’t get fooled, don’t expect anything good, don’t get tricked:
“Kindness will be punished. Speaking is silver, silence is golden. Who laughs last, laughs the longest. He who gives is foolish, he who doesn’t accept is even more so. Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched. Stay where you are, if you are good, they will find you. East or west, home is best…”
I have tried to draw attention to this cynical national characteristic. In this small public cinema I am exhibiting several videos that reflect the theme of death, Czech small-mindedness and contemporary museum management, to which the final exhibition in NG was related.
Parts of the presentation were workshops for children and discussions about the role of art in public space.
